Planting canna flowers and caring for them

Since cannes come from hot, sunny places, for the middle zone of Russia the optimal time for planting in open ground will be mid-May.
When planting cannes for the first time, remember that the plants will become quite large by the summer and each of them will require a lot of space. Therefore, it is recommended to plant the plants at a distance of at least 50 cm from each other.

It is no secret that the main concerns of the gardener in order for the plants to grow beautiful and healthy are:

  • weeding;
  • watering;
  • top dressing.

All these works must be performed regularly.

Cannes like abundant watering, so it is recommended to plant them in a well-watered hole (if the ground in the garden is very dry, then it will be necessary to irrigate and immediately after planting).

If it is necessary to transplant canna, then it is also very important to ensure good watering, and then the plant will easily transfer the transplant.

Feeding cann should be carried out at least 2-3 times during the growing season. It is recommended to use mineral fertilizers in granules.

Winter plants should be indoors. If you want bright flowers of cannes to delight you in the greenhouse or winter garden as long as possible, before the first frost plants can be carefully planted in prepared containers and placed in a winter garden in sufficient light, while the cannes will continue to bloom.

In order to properly "send for wintering" plants that are fading into a flowerbed, not replanting them, but cutting, leave no more than 20 cm from the stem, cutting off excess shears. Dig around the cut stalk, carefully remove it from the ground and place it in the prepared boxes for wintering, then sprinkle the rhizomes with earth and move the boxes into the room.

At the time of wintering it is necessary to reduce watering, the optimal mode will be once every two weeks.

In the spring before planting in open ground need to divide and clean the rhizomes. If the plant will be propagated by seeds, they should be sown in February. The temperature in the room where it is planned to grow seedlings should not be below + 22 ° C.

The first shoots can appear within a fortnight. When the plant will open 2-4 leaves, seedlings need to be placed in pots and move the pots into a room with a temperature of not more than + 16 ° C.
