ASF in Ukraine may provoke a complete halt in pig breeding

With the advent of African swine fever in Ukraine in 2012 to the present day, Ukrainian pig producers received less than 1% compensation for reclaimed animals, the Center for Efficiency in Animal Husbandry said.

Responsibility for the fact that since 2015 the Ukrainian pig producers literally destroy each other, lies on the government and industry associations. Today, the official recognition of an ASF outbreak literally means bankruptcy. The fear of being in the ranks of impoverished farmers makes pig producers hide their cases. Illegal pork markets are also opening.

The virus spreads quite easily through meat and meat products, where it lasts up to six months. It is transmitted through inventory, clothing and food. Sick animals and people who have come in contact with them are carriers of the disease.

Probably, the ASF virus has got to European countries along with labor migrants from Ukraine. It can seize other European countries, which threatens to end the visa-free regime.
