Spain will completely abandon plastic bags by 2021

The new law, adopted last year in Spain, aims to eliminate all packages and containers used in stores. Packages must be compostable or have other formats for complete replacement of plastic bags, starting January 1, 2021.

To date, since the entry into force of the law, in July 2018, butchers have already managed to reduce delivery of light plastic bags to consumers in their establishments by 50%, according to a press release from FEDECARNE Spain.

There are even some meat processing plants, which managed to destroy up to 95% of light plastic bags, replacing them with other formats, such as paper bags.

According to the law, “merchants are obliged to charge plastic bags more than 15 microns from the consumer (except for those that contain at least 70% recycled plastic). The price must also be reflected on the purchase receipt, and a poster should appear in the establishment information about collecting bags. "
