The smallest chickens in the world - Malaysian seram

The Malaysian Serama is a young breed of chickens, their history does not even exceed 20 years. The name of the breed reflects the name of the country where they were bred - Malaysia.

The breed is based on Japanese dwarf breeds crossed with wild chickens from Malaysia. Initially, selection was carried out by professional poultry farmers.

For two decades, the Malaysian Serama - the smallest chickens from all existing breeds - have become known all over the world, but, of course, it is not yet possible to call them the common breed.

One of the limiting factors of the victorious march through the bird yards of the whole world of these crumbs is a rather high cost.

But this does not stop the true poultry farmers, so the Malaysian Seramma breeding hens and males are increasingly found in Russian poultry houses.

Breed description Malaysian Serama

This breed of hens has very unusual breed characteristics.

The body is placed almost vertically, the tail is raised at a right angle of 90%, the neck is arched in a pronounced arc. Slightly arched chest and tail, standing at an angle less than 90 degrees, are considered defects in the breed.

Roosters have legs wide apart, tail with several kositsami. The wings hang down to the floor. The plumage is not dense.

The crest of the rooster is leaf-shaped, the shades are from rich pink to bright red, the lobes are in the same color range. The beak is strong, slightly curved, yellowish.

Interestingly, in the exhibition specimens of this breed, the tail can be put with the help of special devices (the manipulations are similar to those when the ears are straightened by Dobermans). The crooked fingers of the young individuals, who are to demonstrate at the exhibition, are straightened with the help of special rings.

Chickens in appearance look much more modest and smaller than the males of this breed. They have the same long wings hanging to the floor during the stand. The tail is also set at 90%.

Features

Bred in Southeast Asia, the hens of this breed do not tolerate drafts, they are very fond of heat.

Interesting facts: the chest stand is not only genetically incorporated, this type of breast and tail massage is sought.

The extent to which a rooster's chest protrudes is determined in a very original way: chickens are placed on his chest and ideally three chickens should fit there. At home, in Malaysia, great importance is attached to the purity of the breed and regularly hold monobreed competitions for the Malaysian Ceram.

According to information from breeders, the color of this breed does not produce chickens, the pattern is different for all chickens. American breeders, according to unofficial data, managed to fix white in the breed.

Dignity - a very interesting appearance, watching these birds - a real aesthetic pleasure. The disadvantages include the complexity of the content, breeders consider them pampered and capricious (this information is taken on the forums of poultry farmers).

Content and cultivation

Because of the tiny size of chickens this breed is often kept at home, in cages, such as decorative rabbits or rats.

Releasing for a walk out of the cage, special apron are put on the birds (so that they do not throw waste into the room). Perhaps the content in the aviary, but then it is worth considering the question of their safety: because of their small size, they can suffer from larger birds.

One of the breeders on the online forum of poultry farmers shared their observations: the chickens of this breed feel quite confident in the water, keep afloat.

These baby chickens reach sexual maturity by 6-9 months (this factor depends on nutrition). The instinct is not lost in the hen, but it is important to remember one important nuance: as soon as the chickens have reached the age of weeks, it is better to remove them from under the hen, otherwise they will stop.

One hen can incubate from 4 to 7 eggs, the incubation period averages three weeks at a temperature of + 37.5-38C and humidity of 65%.

In the last two or three days before the chicks hatch, the humidity should be almost 100%. Breeders note that chickens have a good survival rate, they are fed with special high-calorie food for up to two months. These chickens are very demanding to the availability of clean water in the drinking bowl.

The Jersey giant is a breed of chickens, so named for its size. These chickens have already replaced broilers in some farms.

But Brahma hens are among the most popular birds in the household. About them in more detail here: //selo.guru/ptitsa/kury/porody/myasnie/brama.

There is information that the chickens of this breed can do without water and food for three days. Individuals of this breed are distinguished by a cheerful, friendly disposition. Relative to each other are not aggressive. The birds are quite dynamic, constantly in motion.

Miniature - so one word can describe the Malaysian seram chickens. Live weight of males 300-650 gr. (officially recorded record of their rooster low weight - 250 grams). Liveweight chicken - 250-300 gr.

By weight, they are divided into three categories: A, B, C-class.

  • B-class: cockerels from 351 gr. up to 500 kg; chickens from 326 to 425 gr.
  • C-class: roosters from 500 to 600 gr., Chickens from 430 to 535 gr.

The smaller chickens of this breed, the more they are valued by experts..

In the year of the hen serami 50-60 eggs weighing an average of 20 to 30 grams are demolished (in size as quail eggs or a little more). Due to low egg production, they are considered not very prolific, but in fairness it should be noted that their main purpose is still decorative. And with their task - to be the decoration of the bird yard - they cope perfectly well.

If the temperature is below + 25 ° C, ceramics chickens stop rolling. Under favorable conditions, rush on schedule: a break of 7-10 days every 5-6 days of laying. Eggs have good taste.

Analogs

Chickens and cockerels of the Malaysian seram breed are very peculiar outwardly, in terms of miniature they have no equal. Analogues of this breed may be other decorative mini-hens, carriers of the dwarfism gene - bentham, reduced copies of such products as Cochinchin, Araucan, Phoenix, Faverol and others.

Discussing the peculiarities of breeding and maintaining this decorative breed of mini-hens, poultry farmers state that in our country it is difficult to vouch that the birds acquired will be pedigree, with an excellent gene pool.

Despite all the difficulties (the chicks are quite expensive, the adults are choosy in maintenance, etc.), the Malaysian Serams already exist in Russian bird houses.

Breeding of ornamental breeds of chickens is now actively developing, which means that it is likely that over time these mini-chickens will become numerous and familiar in Russia.
