Ukraine covers starch shortage with ever-increasing imports

Ukraine remains a net importer of starch, constantly increasing its purchases. Even against the background of the emergence of new enterprises for the manufacture of this product, the state does not refuse to acquire it from other countries, analysts report, citing official statistics.

In 2018, Ukraine purchased 3.9 thousand tons of foreign potato starch, which is 11% higher than the previous year, when the country purchased about 3.5 thousand tons of product on the foreign market. The main sellers of starch were traditionally Belarus and Poland, which imported 50% and 41% of the total amount of starch purchased, reports the State Statistics Service of Ukraine.

  • According to the observations of experts, the situation with the import of starch is associated with the growing demand for a product within the country, which cannot be satisfied by the forces of domestic production facilities. In 2018, several potato-producing companies announced their intention to open their own lines for the production of starch, both with the aim of crowding out foreign products, and with the goal of announcing themselves on the world market.

Today, Ukraine almost does not export starch. The largest deliveries of the product to the external market were registered only in 2016, when the country sold 776 tons of potato starch.
